Europlanet Distributed RTI Facility – Kent Hypervelocity Impact Facility

Europlanet Distributed Research and Technology Infrastructure (RTI) Facility – University of Kent Hypervelocity Impact Facility

Average Transnational Access (TA) visit: 5 days
Preferred timeframe for TA visits: April-June or September-November 2026

The Kent Hypervelocity Impact Facility has a two stage light gas gun which is capable of accelerating projectiles (up to 3 mm in diameter) at speeds between 1 and 6.5 km/s with a standard speed of 5 km/s (higher velocities are achievable for some standard projectiles e.g. 1 mm stainless steel). Targets are typically placed within a ~1 metre cubed vacuum chamber.

Should targets require active monitoring, electrical feed throughs are available.

Please note that a shot programme for an awarded TA visit will include 5 shots.
