Industry
Engagement with industry is a cornerstone of Europlanet’s strategy for delivering sustainable research infrastructure for the planetary community. We believe there are many synergistic opportunities for collaborations between industry and academia that can be beneficial to all parties involved.
Our key aims are to:
- Generate industry/academia collaborations in the context of planetary science
- Support early careers and the planetary community in pursuing a wide range of career paths in academia, industry and the intersecting areas between them
- Ensure that the planetary community has the access to and information on the best tools, services and resources to support their activities
- Support the development and impact of technology that underpins planetary research, through access for industry users to test facilities, as well as training, networking and knowledge transfer.
Reasons for academics to be involved with industry:
- Learn from industry approaches and perspectives (e.g. industry often has a product-oriented vision with clear emphasis on the impact of projects)
- Find terrestrial applications for planetary-related knowledge and technology
- Open up opportunities for funding as collaborative partners
- Potential to fund (co-fund) PhDs
- Exposure can facilitate transition to a career in industry.
Reasons for industry to be involved with planetary scientists:
- Expertise in innovative, complex analysis processes
- Great variety of expertise domains (data analysis, instrumentation) in a range of topics (planetary mapping, atmospheric analysis/forecasting, big data, machine learning)
- Access to a pool of skilled early career professionals
- Finding new users in the planetary community for services, tools and resources.
Europlanet industry engagement activities may include:
- Provision of access to test facilities through our Transnational Access programme
- Exhibition and industry-themed sessions at the annual Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) held in different locations across Europe and regularly attracting over 1200 participants.
- Early careers events, including the Europlanet Early Career (EPEC) Annual Week conference, webinars and sessions
- Industry and policy engagement events e.g. in embassies, the European Parliament, at associated meetings
- Expert exchanges between academia and industry
- Dissemination (newsletter, website, Discord, social media etc) to 2000+ potential users within the planetary community.
