TA2 Facility 8 – Cold Surfaces Spectroscopy at IPAG
Average visit: 8 days
The Cold Surfaces Spectroscopy (CSS) facility houses two unique, custom-made Spectro-Gonio Radiometers, SHINE and SHADOWS, that allow measurement of the bidirectional reflectance spectra and photometric distribution functions of various types of planetary materials (granular to compact) over almost the whole solar spectrum (0.35 to 4.8 µm), with a high degree of radiometric accuracy (< +/-0.5%) under most viewing geometries (illumination and observation up to almost 80°, all azimuths, phase angle > 4-10°).
The instruments are located in a dark cold room that can be cooled down to -20°C or work with cryogenic environmental cells allowing to cool samples down to 60K under controlled atmosphere or vacuum. They are fully automatised and the data calibration and reduction are made with a custom-made software. A number of sample holders and tools to prepare mineral, organic or ice samples and their mixtures are also available.
SHINE is optimized for accurate BRDF measurements for large (2.5-30 cm) moderately dark to bright samples. SHADOWS is optimised for very small dark and/or fine grained samples from a few cm in size down to about 2 mm3 in volume.
Different types of measurements can be programmed:
- reflectance spectra at a single geometry (possibly with varying temperature, or monitored with time: physical/chemical process),
- full spectral BRDF, or only at selected wavelengths (only at room T or with cold room).
